Perhaps I am in the minority, but it seems to me that I have had more mechanical problems with my 2002 Jetta than my parents ever had with their (Japanese) cars. And I’m beginning to wonder if this is common after a conversation I had with a Budget rent-a-car driver.
After dropping off my car at the dealership and being told not to call them, they’d call me (my oil light keeps flashing), the Budget rent-a-car guy picked up me and my son to get a rental car at their other location. On the way over, I asked him if he works with other dealerships in the area. He said no, mostly just Volkswagen and I quote, “Volkswagen keeps us pretty busy.”
Well, of course, they do! Everyone is dropping off their car for maintenance (probably routine) and repairs (I’m sure not so routine.) One guy there this morning was complaining about squeaky brakes and was told that’s normal. He wasn’t convinced. Last time I was there, a woman who had a 2-month-old car said she was having issues with her “new” car (i.e, braking, doors locking, etc.).
So, now that my car is paid off, I’m enjoying not having a monthly payment. However, I’m not enjoying the plethora of problems this car is providing me. Maybe I got a lemon, maybe other Volkswagens are better made. I really can’t be sure. But don’t worry – I’ve learned my lesson. I will not buy another German-engineered car. Although, I hear that Beemers are much better and you get free maintenance. Anyone got $50K I can borrow?
